The article examines the process of formation and development of education in the Ryazan province at the initial stage of the formation of institutions of the regional educational system, represented within the space-time continuum by a network of educational institutions at various levels. This process is an actual scientific and local history problem of knowing the historical past of your area, which is inextricably linked with the realities of modernity and is the purpose of this work. The scientific novelty of this work is to study the formation and development of various educational institutions of the Ryazan province in a least-studied time period – the last quarter of XVIII – first half XIX centuries, characterized by the emergence of regional systems of education in the Russian Empire.
The article is based on the principles of a concrete historical approach that allows us to characterize public educational institutions (gymnasiums, public schools) that form the material basis of the educational process. Special attention is paid to the use of archival local history material, the theoretical heritage of historians and local historians, devoted to the formation and development of education in the Ryazan region in the last quarter of the XVIII – first half of the XIX centuries, using literary and statistical research methods. Based on the local history analysis of the material, institutional and structural features of the formation of a network of educational institutions on the territory of the Ryazan province in the studied period of time are revealed. The initial success and difficulties of formation of the Ryazan region as a single open system that ensures the cultural development of the region in a specific historical period of time and in the future are shown.
The results obtained allowed us to substantiate the General trends in the development of the education system in the Ryazan province in the last quarter of the XVIII – first half of the XIX centuries, formed under the influence of both objective and subjective factors of the socio-historical process. These trends reflect the spatial and temporal nature of the formation and initial development of a two-level education system in the Ryazan province, characterized by a positive quantitative dynamics of the creation of both educational institutions themselves and the contingent of students.
